Clay and History

Clay was the first material used for ceramic objects. Ceramic objects were numerous, from ancient times and for this reason the archaeological findings we have nowadays coming from the clay. It is no coincidence that almost in all major excavations, we find clay artefacts which used by people in daily lives independent living standards.

 

ANCIENT

 

 

The ancient Greeks had developed the art of pottery and ceramics as well as the Cycladic civilization, which is considered the oldest ever developed in the Greek area. Also Crete, during the Minoan Period especially in Knossos and Phaistos had tremendous growth in the ceramic art. The 7th BC, Athens and Corinth were the first cities from Greece which had developed pottery.

The vessels that existed in those days were:

 

• The User: covering the daily needs of the household.

• Rituals: which were used for religious purposes.
• The precast: As jugs, cups and more.
• The Luxury: For public gatherings.
• The Storage: As pitchers, jars, amphorae

The raw material for the creation of the clay until today is the soil (clay). Different decorating techniques, mingling of colors, different shapes, is what it makes special each ceramic.

Clay is a supple material. Can be purchased from the pottery workshops and potteries. In addition clay selling packed in bookstores and paint shops in smaller packages.
