The first vessels and the potter's wheel probably invented in Mesopotamia in the 4th millennium BC, but spread across nearly the Eurasia and much of Africa, although it remained unknown in the New World until the arrival of Europeans . The Decoration of clay and painting is very widely used in ceramics since the beginning were mostly geometric, but often included and figurative designs.
The pottery was particularly important in the archaeology of prehistoric cultures that many cultures are known for their name, they had received their distinctive accordingly, for example: the Linear Pottery culture, Beaker culture, the Spherical Amphora culture, culture Funnelbeaker and others, are just some examples from Neolithic Europe (approximately 7000-1800 BC).
The Ceramic art has generated many styles from its own tradition, but it is often closely related to contemporary sculpture and metalwork projects. Many times in the history of pottery style was copied from the most prestigious and expensive art of metalworking. This can be seen in the early to Chinese ceramics, such as pottery and ceramics Dynasty Xiang, Ancient Roman and Iranian pottery, as with copying contemporary silverware shapes. A common use of ceramics is vases, jars, bowls, vases and other tableware and figurines.

Cracking is a phenomenon that occurs in certain ceramics which are glazed and leads to the formation of microvoids, and small fibrils. Cracking in ceramics known as krakele or crazing, is the effect which a ceramic looks like it has cracked the glazed, so the outer layer is broken.
example of a cracking ceramic.
Of course, this is not valid and the ceramic could not be broken and used for household use,but just looks like as it has cracked on the glaze. The appearance of the ceramic and the effect of krakele in ceramics can give another type of beauty in the ceramic and the result is very impressive. This is due to some characteristics of the c l a y either the glaze and do not affect the quality or the durability of the ceramic.

The engobe technique in ceramics used in case we want to change the colour of the ceramic piece. As we want to change the colour of one ceramic,we decide what colour and how many layers we will pour this ceramic. When we want want to pour with engobe, the ceramic should be neither too dry nor too fresh. Then we pour with engobe the piece and we put it in the oven and thus changes the exterior colour. Then we can paint it normally as if nothing has changed and baked in the oven or we can glazing it without any problem.
Many times we go through a layer, sometimes two, and other times through two different colours of engobe. As we want to change the colour of one piece then the use of engobe is one way road, otherwise the only colour that we can have is the natural colour of the clay. (With the exception of the whole painting ).

Glazing is very important for ceramics vessels as otherwise they would be unsuitable for holding liquids inside then. Glaze is also used on porcelain and stoneware ceramics. In addition to the functional aspect of glazes, they can change the form a variety of surface finishes, including degrees of gloss and matte and the color. Glazes may also enhance an underlying design or texture which may be either the unmodified texture of the underlying body, or an inscribed, carved or painted design.
For ceramic glaze raw materials generally include silica, which will be the main glass former. We use various metal oxides, such as sodium, and calcium act as a flux to lower the melting temperature. Alumina often derived from clay, stiffens the molten glaze to prevent it from running off the piece. The colorants, such as iron oxide, copper carbonate, are used to modify the visual appearance of the fired glaze. Glaze use to be applied by dry dusting a dry mixture over the surface of the clay body or by inserting salt into the kiln at high temperatures to create a sea of sodium vapor that interacts with the silica oxides in the body to form and deposit glass, producing what is known as salt glaze pottery. There are many many techniques for glazing that we will se to another post.Until then have a nice day!!!!!!

One of the most important tools in manufacturing ceramics is undoubtedly the pottery wheel. In pottery, a potter's wheel is a machine used in the shaping of the inner round (indoor) at ceramics. The wheel can also be used in the process of implementation as well as the decoration of ceramics. The use of the potter's wheel became widespread across the continent, but was unknown in pre-Columbian times, where the hand-made pottery.
The main job of the wheel is the configuration of the interior and exterior of the object. On the wheel many times we use other tools, such as molds which helps us to give the clay a specific shape and rotating with the wheel. There are many of them such as automatic, semi-automatic and moving with the leg.On majority of today's wheels the speed is adjusted according to the needs and preferences of the potter.
